Penybont Youth Football Team to visit Germany
Penybont Youth Football Team enjoyed a six day visit to Bad Rappenau, Germany at the end of August 2019. The trip has been facilitated by Llandrindod Wells and Area Twinning Association in partnership with their twin town in Bad Rappenau. A full programme of activities had been organized for the twelve young footballers aged 12-13 years old, including matches against teams in Germany. The youngsters enjoyed experiencing life in a new environment – particularly the superb spa facilities found in Bad Rappenau that include an outdoor heated swimming pool with wave machine and diving boards.
Llandrindod Wells Twinning Association has held a number of fundraising events during the year to help fund twinning exchange visits by young people and before the trip the Association’s Chairman Joyce Hope presented the football team’s coach Nigel Mason with a cheque for £1,000 as a contribution towards the cost of the trip. Nigel thanked the Twinning Association for its generous gift and for helping to organize the trip to Germany.
Joyce Hope, Chairman of Llandrindod Twinning pointed out that in order to fund these visits the Twinning Association relies on voluntary contributions and support, particularly with offers of accommodation to host the visitors. Anybody wishing to be involved is asked to contact the Twinning Association through links on its website https://llandrindodtwinning.wordpress.com/ or by phoning the Secretary on 01597 822111
Tree planting commemorates First World War soldier
Llandrindod Wells Twinning Association took up the offer from Llandrindod Wells Mayor to plant a Tree of Remembrance for a soldier who lost his life in the First World War. The Twinning Association in liaison with the Friends of the Rock Park chose a plot on the edge of the former playing fields of Llandrindod Secondary School as an appropriate place for a birch tree to be planted in remembrance of Edward A Hope who died in France in 1918.
Edward was a pupil at the school and was one of three brothers from Llandrindod Wells who lost their lives in the First World War. Edward died in Picardy, France in August 1918 at the age of 21 and his brother John died in Palestine in March 1917 at the age of 23. Their half brother David Evans was a prisoner of war and died in Turkey in March 1917 at the age of 27 – a great loss from one family in Llandrindod Wells.
The tree has been planted on the edge of the playing field where it is thought all three brothers had played football during their time at the secondary school. The tree is marked with a simple wooden cross to remind people walking by of the sacrifice made by families in Llandrindod Wells during the First World War.
